About Stephen

Stephen Kyle has a degree in engineering from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in engineering measurement from University College London (UCL) and has been working in Large Volume Metrology (LVM) for over 30 years.

Much of this work was as an employee of Leica Geosystems (now part of Hexagon MI), and its predecessor companies. This included 6 years working in German at the Swiss manufacturing sites in both production and research. His final major task at Leica was the simulation, modelling and calibration analysis for the 6D laser tracker, winner of the Frost & Sullivan 2004 Industrial Automation Product Innovation of the Year Award.

He now works independently but in close association with UCL where he is an Honorary Senior Research Associate in the Dept. of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. Here he works closely with Prof. Stuart Robson on industrial measurement technology which has included several projects for Airbus, the recently finished LUMINAR project (led by NPL) and the ongoing Light-Controlled Factory project (led by Bath University).

He has an strong interest in knowledge transfer and is joint author with Thomas Luhmann, Stuart Robson and Jan Boehm of “Close-Range Photogrammetry and 3D Imaging”, the second English edition of Luhmann’s original German textbook which, in its first edition won the Karl Kraus Medal for excellence in authorship from the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS).

Another major knowledge transfer activity is the development of a prototype online knowledge base of portable coordinate metrology seed-funded by UCL.

Together with Prof. Ben Hughes of the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) he is also working with the University of Aachen’s Machine Tool Lab (WZL – Werkzeugmaschinenlabor) to set up the 3D Metrology Conference series ( which is planned to run at different European venues.
